Onco-orthopedic management of patients with bone metastases of malignant tumors based on patients’ quality of life. Literature reviewVorobchuk M.V.1, Burlaka A.A.1, Dedkov А.G.2
Summary. Bone metastases (BM) are a common complication of malignant tumors, accompanied by pain syndrome, pathological fractures, spinal cord compression, and decreased quality of life of patients. Surgical treatment, as part of a comprehensive treatment, in many cases helps to restore skeletal stability, reduce pain, and improve functional status, however, there are situations when surgical interventions can worsen the patient’s prognosis. In order to improve the accuracy of decision-making regarding the methods and required volume of treatment for this group of patients, prognostic tools in the form of indices, scales, and models are widely used worldwide. This article provides an overview of such tools, as well as non-surgical methods used to treat BM, taking into account the assessment of the patient’s general condition, localization of the lesion, primary focus, survival prognosis, and functional outcome. Special attention is paid to the choice of surgical intervention method, the role of minimally invasive technologies, and the combination of surgery with other treatment methods.
